Why language training matters for Japan placements

Japanese language ability is the single biggest factor in selection for Japanese employers — here is how to prepare.

For Japan placements, language is usually the deciding factor. Japanese employers and the visa process itself expect a basic, exam-proven level of Japanese. English ability alone is rarely enough.

What the employer is really testing

They are not testing whether you can hold a deep conversation. They are testing whether you can understand safety instructions, ask for help, and live independently in Japan. Proven levels such as JLPT N4 or N5 are common entry points, but the practical requirement is what matters.

How to prepare properly

  • Join a structured class, not just an app — consistent teaching matters.
  • Practice listening: announcements, workplace phrases, directions.
  • Learn the phrases used in your work type first (factory, care work, farming).
  • Do mock interviews in Japanese with your trainer.
  • Get a certificate of your level so it is documented.
  • Continue practising even after you pass — you will need it on day one.

Be realistic about timelines. Language training takes months of daily effort. If an agent promises a fast Japan placement without any Japanese training, ask exactly how the employer requirement is being met.

Ask the agency whether training is included in the programme, what the class schedule is, and whether the trainers are qualified for your target level.
