Practical advice for in-person and video interviews with international employers.
Your interview shows the employer who you are. Answers matter, but so do your preparation and your presentation. These six tips help you walk into the interview with your best foot forward — in person or on video.
1. Know the job before the interview
Read the job title, duties and requirements again. Be ready to say, in simple terms, why you can do the work and how much related experience you have.
2. Rehearse out loud
Practise answers out loud with someone you trust, or in front of a mirror. If the interview is in another language, practise in that language — a word-for-word memorised speech is risky, but rehearsed points are confidence builders.
3. Prepare your documents
Have your passport, certificates and experience letters organised and ready. The interviewer will rarely check every file, but being able to produce them instantly signals serious preparation.
4. Dress and behave professionally
Dress neatly and modestly. Arrive early for in-person interviews, test your camera and light before video interviews, and look into the camera where possible.
5. Answer honestly
- If you do not know something, say so clearly and describe how you would learn.
- Never exaggerate experience — background checks happen later.
- Ask for clarification if a question is unclear rather than guessing.
6. Ask questions yourself
Asking about the work schedule, accommodation, living arrangements and the first weeks shows genuine interest. It is also your best chance to verify the job matches what was promised.
A real employer expects questions about your role and conditions. An agent or employer who discourages questions should raise your caution.
