The documents, preparations and mindset to organise in the final weeks before you travel for work abroad.
The weeks before departure decide how smoothly your first month abroad goes. Use this checklist so that when the flight arrives, you travel with everything arranged — and everyone at home knows where things stand.
Documents and copies
- Passport with the required validity and your visa/reference from the employer
- Original and photocopies of your employment contract
- Copies of all certified certificates and experience letters
- Passport photos — extra sets for registration and ID purposes
- Emergency contact numbers of your agency and the embassy
- Digital copies of everything, stored in your email or cloud
Money and family arrangements
- Enough initial money for the first days — check the allowed amount to carry or transfer
- A budget plan for your first wages: what will be sent home and when
- A clear contact plan with your family: which day and time to call
- Bank and mobile-money details so money transfers reach the right people
Orientation and health
- Attend the orientation and skills briefing your agency provides
- Understand the workplace rules, local customs and how to get help
- Carry any prescribed medicines in their original packaging with a doctor's note
- Know your insurance cover and who to call in an emergency
A written checklist shared with your family beats memory. Tick each item as it is done, and travel with a single folder that holds the documents you will use on arrival.
